#50 Transsiberian (2008)

A great thriller that takes place on a train on a 5,000 mile ride. Good characters and mystery. Highly recommended.

#49 The Love Guru (2008)

I feel bad for Mike Myers. He used to be hilarious. I didn't laugh once through this reused joke fest. Completely and utterly awful.

#48 Twilight (2008)

Tween emo vampire movie. Atrocious acting and gayness all around.

#47 Bangkok Dangerous (2008)

Another miscast and unneeded Hollywood remake. Cage is sporting his permanent mullet while trying to act like a bad ass hitman. He also falls in love with a deaf pharmacist. How sweet. Not.

#46 Great Expectations (1946)

Caught this on TCM. Never saw this before or was aware of it being a book, but I'm sure I've heard of Great Expectations before. I totally forgot about it, but after looking this up I realized I had seen the 1998 adaptation. Very interesting movie - the characters pulled me in instantly as each one was introduced. I fell alseep before the ending was completely revealed, so I cheated and looked up the complicated ending on Wikipedia. I'm going to Netflix it soon to see it start to finish.

#45 Confessions of a Superhero (2007)

Funny documentary that focuses on the losers that dress up as superheros for their day jobs and pester you for pictures in Hollywood. Everyone in this movie is screwed up mentally in some way. I'm glad I am none of these people.

#44 Synecdoche, NY (2008)

I can't even pronounce this title. Synecdoche, NY was too intellectually expensive for me to comprehend. Something happened here.

#43 Poseidon (2006)

Decent for a boat disaster film. Best part is when Fergie realizes she is about to die.

#42 Knowing (2009)

I was firmly against seeing this after the trailers made it out to be the sequel to Next. It didn't help that Nic Cage has been in a string of terrible movies for the last few years. After finding out Alex Proyas (Dark City) was behind it, I cast out all doubt and went to see it, because I knew even if Cage's acting sucked, the concepts put forth by Proyas would be worth it. The accident scenes were amazing and the last 20 minutes was a great payoff. Makes you think.

#41 Chalk (2006)

This movie is Reno 911 for teachers. Pretty hilarious once you look at it that way.

#40 Bad Guy (2001)

So far, Bad Guy is the first bad Kim Ki-duk film - I have loved the other films of his including The Isle, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring, 3-Iron, The Bow, and Time. In Bad Guy, a college girl is setup as a pickpocket and forced to into prostitution to pay back the money that was stolen. Somehow she develops feelings for the man that got her into this situation. In other Kim films you can understand where the characters are coming from and it makes sense - Bad Guy was just a bad idea.

#39 Overnight (2003)

Overnight is a documentary that follows Troy Duffy from a total loser working a bar to being heralded as the next big director in Hollywood, then back again to being a total loser. This guy is a grade-A douchebag. He is famous for his script for The Boondock Saints being picked up by Miramax and promptly dropped, eventually making the movie with another company on a much smaller budget with direct-to-DVD release after a limited theater run, being cut out of the profits entirely, his band The Brood being dropped from Atlantic records, and then finally being blacklisted from Hollywood by Harvey Weinstein himself. The ultimate ego, on film, Duffy is often seen telling his bandmates to "Shut the fuck up and do your job, and you might get paid". In the end, Hollywood tells Duffy to shut the fuck up, and we are all better off because of it.

#38 Volver (2006)

In Volver, the ghost of Raimunda's mother returns from the dead because of unfinished family business. It takes place in a small village in Spain where the locals are very superstitious and believe in ghosts. The ghost ends up moving in with Sole, Raimunda's sister, and helping her with the hair salon she runs out of her house. Interesting movie with a twist at the end; see it.

#37 Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)

VCB is a subtle romantic comedy with lots of good looking people in it and great scenery. I liked the story and characters and wish I was as suave as Javier Bardem. Woody Allen wins again.

#36 Penelope (2006)

Penelope is a fairy-tale story about a cursed girl born with pig ears and nose. Her family fakes her death and keeps her locked away in their mansion until she is 18 and begins interviewing would-be suitors to marry her to break the curse. It's not too hilarious, but not too terrible either. Catherine O'Hara is funny and should be in more movies.

#35 Frost/Nixon (2008)

Amazing recreation of the Frost/Nixon interviews. Frank Langella's Nixon is eerily accurate. I enjoyed it for the historical significance and for the fact it wasn't always certain it would actually happen. Nothing like this will ever take place with Bush, unfortunately. Watch the real thing on Google video after the movie and you'll appreciate the accuracy even more.

#34 Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist (2008)

For some reason I had it in my head that I was told this movie was good, but it wasn't. I hate false memories. I probably fabricated the thoughts because Michael Cera was in it. Damn you Michael Cera. I can't hate you forever, but damn, this movie was a disappointment.

#33 Watchmen (2009)

Watchmen is an awesome movie adaptation that follows closely the graphic novel of the same name released in the 80s. I started reading the book this week in anticipation and made it about 2/3 of the way through. It takes places in an alternate 1985 where Richard Nixon has been elected president five times and Watergate never happened. The USA and USSR are on the brink of nuclear war. Our 'super-heroes' are but ordinary people dressing up to fight crime and all save one actually have any actual super powers.

I think Zack Snyder did a respectable job bringing Watchmen to the big screen and making it accessible to people that have never read the novel. Some parts of the story were changed or omitted, but the film still reached the same conclusion as the novel.

If you like super-hero movies, you should see this.

#32 Milk (2008)

I'm surprised this movie could take place in 2009 and still fit. We should be past all of this. I don't know why Harvey Milk wasn't a mainstream name until this movie was made. If there was such an uproar in the 70's over gay rights you would think we would have all this resolved now. Did everyone go back into the closet when Harvey was killed?

It's pathetic that 30+ years later people are arguing about the same thing and once again taking away others rights, as if it has anything to do with them. Why aren't the Anita Bryants and John Briggs of the world assassinated instead?

#31 Rachel Getting Married (2008)

Rachel Getting Married is an interesting film. On one hand, the acting is great and convincing. On the other hand, I don't give a shit about dishwasher loading competitions. The film is very voyeuristic, which means if a character takes 5 minutes to load a dishwasher, we are going to watch them for 5 minutes. Extremely boring.

When the movie isn't forcing me to watch 10 minutes of people dancing in between the real plot, there is something to it. The main problem is that the story is wrapped around the most implausible and just plain weird wedding ever concocted in the history of the world. When you peel back all the layers, there is a good movie in here.

I really don't know how to rate it. It's either brilliant, or totally ridiculous. I can't decide.
